Historically, ‘a fifth’ is an antiquated U.S. measurement that referred to 1/5th of a gallon. You won’t get gallons these days, though.

Before things got standardized in the 19th century, alcohol bottles came in all sorts of shapes and sizes. There’s a long history of vodka, so it’s hard to summarize everything here. While producing methods became more standardized over time, it wasn’t until the 1980s that physical bottles became more homogenized.

In terms of vodka shots, there are about 17 single shots in a 1/5th of vodka, based on a 750ml bottle, with a standardized 1.5 fl. oz. shot.

Then, the recipe would call for 1 vodka shot of Absolut Citron, and half a shot glass of the other ingredients. This makes the recipe easy to scale up. Instead, if a part was half a cup, we could easily adapt the recipe using the same logic.
