Pumpkin Spice Moscow Mule: A Halloween Cocktail
While there is no shortage of great Halloween drinks, including a Bloody Mary, few are served in a pumpkin. Until now.
Introducing the Pumpkin Spice Moscow Mule.
What Is a Pumpkin Spice Moscow Mule?
A Pumpkin Spice Moscow Mule is a twist on a classic Moscow Mule made with Absolut Vodka, lime juice and ginger beer, with pumpkin spice added for an autumn flavor.
The Moscow Mule was one of our most popular vodka cocktails last year, so if you want to start with the original, see our classic Moscow Mule recipe.
While the Moscow Mule is usually served in a signature copper mug, this one comes in a pumpkin, garnished with three cinnamon sugar mini donuts.
Hey, the Bloody Mary is known for over-the-top garnishes with everything from bacon toi pancakes, but a Moscow Mule served in a pumpkin with a donut skewer? Now that’s a garnish.
Halloween is the one night everyone dresses up, so your drink may as well come in costume too.
Watch how to make one:
How to Make a Halloween Pumpkin Spice Moscow Mule
To make a Halloween Pumpkin Spice Moscow Mule, shake Absolut Vodka, pumpkin spice and fresh lime juice with ice, strain it into a hollowed-out mini pumpkin and top with ginger beer.
If you can scoop out a pumpkin, you can make this drink.
Ingredients:
- 45 ml Absolut Vodka
- 5 ml Pumpkin Spice Mix
- 15 ml Fresh Lime Juice
- 120 ml Ginger Beer
- 1 Mini Pumpkin
- 3 Cinnamon Sugar-Dusted Mini Donuts
- Ice Cubes
How to make it:
- Cut the top off a mini pumpkin, then scoop out and discard the pulp and seeds. This is your drinking vessel.
- Fill the larger tin of a Boston shaker with ice cubes.
- Use a jigger to measure 45 ml Absolut Vodka and add it to the shaker.
- Add 5 ml pumpkin spice mix.
- Cut a lime in half and juice one half to get 15 ml of lime juice. Add it to the shaker.
- Seal the shaker and shake vigorously until ice cold.
- Use a mesh strainer to strain the cocktail directly into the pumpkin.
- Top with 120 ml ginger beer.
- Thread three cinnamon sugar-dusted mini donuts vertically onto a metallic cocktail pick and place it in the pumpkin.
- Serve with a straw.
Can You Serve a Cocktail in a Pumpkin?
Yes, you can serve a cocktail in a mini pumpkin…and we have. Choose a food-safe pumpkin with a flat base and thick walls, hollowed out and washed, with room for approximately 200 ml.
- Test the size: fill it with water first. The drink needs room for about 185 ml of liquid.
- Check it’s stable: a flat base stops it tipping once it’s full.
- Check for damage: skip any pumpkin with cracks or soft spots.
- Use a food-safe pumpkin: pick one sold for eating or cooking, not a decorative one that may be waxed or sprayed and wash and dry it before cutting.
- Scoop thoroughly: leftover pulp can taste bitter and cloud the drink.
What Is a Good Halloween Cocktail for a Party?
A good Halloween cocktail for a party looks the part as much as it tastes the part. The Pumpkin Spice Moscow Mule shows up in its own hollowed-out mini pumpkin, which is about as Halloween as a drink can get without wearing a cape.
Since each drink is shaken and served in its own pumpkin, it’s better suited to a small Halloween get-together than a house full of guests. Unless, of course, you’ve got a whole patch of mini pumpkins in your backyard.
What Is Pumpkin Spice?
If you’ve made it this far, you’re probably wondering what’s actually in pumpkin spice. It’s a blend of ground spices, typically cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and cloves, and sometimes allspice. Despite the name, it doesn’t actually contain pumpkin. No, really.
Happy Halloween!
