How to Make Cocktails in a Pitcher for a Crowd

Summary:

Multiply your cocktail’s ratio by the number of guests, using “parts” to scale — a jigger, a cup, whatever’s on hand. Build everything except carbonated mixers (soda water, ginger beer, sparkling wine) directly in the pitcher, then top up each glass with those just before serving. Keep the pitcher chilled with no ice inside it, taste before serving, and adjust if needed.

There is no award for hand-shaking 40 individual cocktails. Batching them in a pitcher gets you the same drink for a fraction of the effort — and lets you rejoin the party you’re hosting.

Here’s everything you need to know about batch cocktails and how to make them at home.

Why Make Cocktails in a Pitcher?

Making cocktails in a pitcher means you multiply the recipe, mix everything in advance, and get back to your guests — no bartending required.

This is known as batching, and it runs on the exact same logic as a single-serve cocktail: the right ratio of spirit, mixer and garnish. The only thing that changes is scale, not skill.

The key to scaling drinks is understanding how to use parts — the relative measurement system that makes scaling any cocktail recipe simple. As Ricardo ‘Rico’ Dynan, Bartender and Absolut Global Brand Ambassador, puts it: “You decide what a part is. Whatever you say is one part, you go from that.”

For a single drink, a part might be a jigger. For a pitcher, a part might be a cup.  Just keep the ratio consistent and the drink will taste as it should.

How Do You Scale a Cocktail Recipe for a Pitcher?

To scale a cocktail recipe for a pitcher, start with the single-serve cocktail recipe and multiply each ingredient by the number of servings you need.

For example, if a Screwdriver calls for 1½ parts vodka and 5 parts orange juice, and you’re making it for eight people, multiply each part by eight. Keep the ratio consistent and the drink will taste as it should.

One rule that applies to every batch cocktail: always add carbonated ingredients – soda water, ginger beer, sparkling wine – per glass just before serving, never into the pitcher. Adding them in advance will flatten the carbonation and dull the drink.

Screwdriver — scaled by crowd size (1½ parts vodka : 5 parts orange juice)

Servings Vodka Orange Juice
4 180 ml 600 ml
8 360 ml 1200 ml (1.2 L)
12 540 ml 1800 ml (1.8 L)

This table shows the Screwdriver’s 1½:5 ratio (vodka : orange juice) scaled in milliliters. Prefer to work in parts instead? Use any unit you like — a jigger, a cup — as long as you keep the same 1½:5 ratio.

Check out this article where we explain cocktail parts.

Quick pitcher-size guide

  • Standard pitcher (1.9 L) → serves about 8 drinks (180 ml pour, no ice in the pitcher)
  • Large pitcher (2.8 L) → serves about 12 drinks
  • Add carbonated mixers per glass — don’t count that volume toward pitcher capacity

What Cocktails Work Well in a Pitcher?

Built cocktails and stirred drinks are perfect for scaling.

But basically any drink that requires a dry shake, fine straining or a specific technique per serve is better made to order.

Here are eight cocktails to batch and serve in a pitcher:

  • Screwdriver – Absolut Vodka and orange juice. 1½ parts vodka, 5 parts juice. The simplest batch cocktail there is.
  • Moscow Mule – Absolut Vodka, fresh lime juice and ginger beer. Batch the vodka and lime in a pitcher, add ginger beer per glass. Check out the recipe for a Moscow Mule, then simply scale it.
  • Sea Breeze – Absolut Vodka, cranberry juice and grapefruit juice. 1 part vodka, 2 parts cranberry juice, 1 part grapefruit juice. Built in the pitcher, poured over ice per glass.
  • Absolut Citron Lemonade – Absolut Citron, fresh lemonade. Add soda water per glass. Check out the recipe for an Absolut Citron Lemonade.
  • Bay Breeze – The tropical alternative to the Sea Breeze. Absolut Vodka, cranberry juice and pineapple juice. 1 part vodka, 1½ parts cranberry juice, 1½ parts pineapple juice.
  • Cosmopolitan — Absolut Citron, triple sec, cranberry juice and fresh lime juice. Check out the recipe for a Cosmopolitan.

Watch Rico Make an Easy Cocktail for a Pitcher

In an episode of Absolut Drinks with Rico, Ricardo ‘Rico’ Dynan is joined by Hedda Bruce – General Manager and award-winning bartender at Stockholm’s acclaimed bar and restaurant, Tjoget – to make an Absolut Watermelon Fizzy Punch.

“It’s fruity, it’s sweet – it’s easy as heck to whip up when you’ve got friends coming over,” says Rico.

The Absolut Watermelon Fizzy Punch is made with Absolut Watermelon, fresh watermelon blended and strained through a sieve directly into the pitcher, lemon juice and simple syrup – all measured in parts and scaled for a group.

Soda water is added per glass to keep the fizz intact, and the drink is garnished with fresh mint. In the video, you’ll also see the parts system demonstrated in action.

What Are the Golden Rules of Pitcher Cocktails?

Whether you’re making the Absolut Watermelon Fizzy Punch or any of the drinks above, these rules apply to pretty much every pitcher cocktail you’ll ever make. Follow them and you can’t go wrong.

  • Use parts to scale – here’s how
  • Always use fresh ingredients – juice, citrus and garnishes
  • Add carbonated mixers per glass, never into the pitcher
  • Keep the pitcher chilled until serving – ice in the pitcher dilutes the drink
  • Taste and adjust before serving – scaling sometimes requires a small tweak

Now pick your drink, scale it up and step away from the bar.
