Celebrate World Paloma Day…With a Vodka Twist!
Happy World Paloma Day!
On 21 September, it’s time to raise a glass and celebrate World Paloma Day.
Ah, the Paloma – one of the most loved cocktails in the world. The Paloma is a classic tequila cocktail believed to have originated in Mexico City in the 1950s. In addition to being an incredible tasting drink, the Paloma is also an easy to make cocktail with no shaking or blending required.
To make a Paloma cocktail, grab a rocks glass, wet the rim with lime juice, and dip it in salt. Next, add some ice cubes followed by Tequila Blanco. Fill to the top with grapefruit soda, and garnish with a lime wheel. Voilà! A classic Paloma and a perfect summer drink!
But here at Absolut, in the spirit of doing things differently, we’ll be celebrating World Paloma Day with a vodka twist!
How to make a Paloma with vodka
Introducing The Swedish Paloma. It’s the best Paloma you’ve never had!
Also known as the Absolut Grapefruit Paloma, this twist on a Paloma is made with Absolut Grapefruit – our incredible grapefruit-flavored vodka – as the base instead of tequila. Let’s just say, if you like the taste of grapefruit in the original, you’ll love this drink.
Unlike the original Paloma, the Swedish Paloma is a shaken drink, so you’ll need a cocktail shaker.
In addition to having a different spirit base, the Swedish Paloma also uses fresh ruby grapefruit juice instead of grapefruit soda. Trust us, this gives it a more intense and authentic grapefruit taste.
But we’re not done yet. For an extra burst of citrus freshness, add some fresh lime juice. The zesty lime flavor is key to this drink.
Serving the Swedish Paloma
We recommend serving the Swedish Paloma in a highball glass. Start by wetting the rim with fresh grapefruit juice and dipping it in salt, then fill the glass with ice cubes.
Next, it’s time to shake things up. Fill your shaker with ice cubes and shake until thoroughly chilled.
To capture the effervescence of the classic Paloma, the Swedish Paloma uses crisp, sparkling soda water. Just remember not to add the soda water to your cocktail shaker unless you’re planning on redecorating your kitchen with a fizzy grapefruit mess. Put the soda water to one side until you’re done shaking and ready to pour your drink.
After you’ve finished shaking, place a Hawthorne strainer over the shaker and carefully pour both the cocktail and soda water into the highball glass simultaneously.
Finally, garnish with a generous wedge of juicy grapefruit placed directly in the glass. Hey, what can we say? We love the taste of grapefruit!
Zesty, citrusy, and absolutely delicious, the Swedish Paloma is the perfect drink to sip in celebration of World Paloma Day!
