WATCH: Rico Shows You How to Make The Boulevardier

The Boulevarider. A long-forgotten drink originating from the hustle and bustle of 1920s Paris.

Almost forgotten for 80 years, it’s a smooth, bittersweet and oh-so-elegant drink. In the words of Rico himself, “It’s a Bourbon Negroni – it’s gonna be fantastic.”

The Boulevarider is simple to make with equal parts of three different alcohols – Bourbon, orange bitter Italian liqueur and Red Vermouth, and just like an Old Fashioned, this is a sipping drink.

The trickiest part about making this drink is getting an ice piece large enough to fill your glass, which you’ll want to get right as the ice’s dilution is vital to your drinking experience. Fear not, Rico shows you how to get your ice just nice.

Last but not least, in addition to making the classic version of The Boulevarider, Rico then answers the all-important question – “Will It Vodka?”.

For this challenge, Rico opts for Absolut Mandarin. Why Mandarin-flavored Vodka? “Orange is a flavor or a note that you get in some Bourbons and since we’re getting rid of a lot of the bourbon flavor, (you can) add a little extra flavor with some Absolut Mandarin and just to see how that works,” explains Rico.

So, does it work? Does it Vodka? Watch to find out.

Don’t forget to like and subscribe to Absolut Drinks on YouTube so you never miss a drink.

A clear glass jar filled with syrup on a wooden surface, surrounded by cocktail ingredients including a bottle of Absolut vodka, a metal juicer and fresh grapes.

How to Make Simple Syrup and What to Use as Alternatives

If you look at basically any cocktail recipe, you’ve probably seen one common ingredient that’s in probably eight out of ten recipes. That ingredient? Simple syrup.

But what is simple syrup? As Bartender and Global Brand Ambassador Absolut Vodka, Rico says, “It’s the salt and pepper of drinks”.

Simple syrup helps balance out the drink. “You need that sweet and sour combination to really cause the balancing act that makes all great cocktails great”, shares Rico. It simultaneously carries and enhances flavors, adding both depth and complexity.

An Essential Cocktail Ingredient
In short, simple syrup is an essential for every home bar. If you’re going to make cocktails at home, you’re most certainly going to need simple syrup.

So, what cocktails use simple syrup you ask? Hmmm, well, a lot. According to Rico, approximately eight out of ten drinks. From mojitos to sophisticated old fashioneds, simple syrup is the secret weapon that is going to help elevate the taste and quality of your drinks.

Couldn’t you just use normal sugar, you ask? “Well, to be fair if you’re just gonna use sugar you’re gonna get a lot of a granular texture,” answers Rico. “If using simple syrup, you’re gonna get a clean texture through your drink. There’s gonna be no grains and it’s just easier to work with to get it to dissolve.”

How to Make Simple Syrup
So, now that you know how essential it is, how do you make simple syrup? Luckily, as the name suggests, it’s simple. Heat equal parts caster sugar and water over a low heat until the sugar is completely dissolved. For example, one part water to one part sugar (1:1). Once dissolved, let your simple syrup cool before using.

Save Time, Make a Batch
Instead of making a single serve of simple syrup each time you’re making a cocktail, we recommend making a large batch of simple syrup. Again, use the equal parts caster sugar and water. Believe us, it’ll save you a lot of time, allowing you to follow cocktail recipes on the fly.

OK, so now that you’ve made a large batch, understandably you want to know how to store simple syrup. Once you’ve prepared your mixture, pour it into bottles or any lidded container that’s easy to pour from. How long does simple syrup last? You can store your simple syrup in the fridge for around one month.

Alternatives To Simple Syrup
If you’re looking for simple syrup alternatives, honey, maple syrup, and agave are three popular substitutes. Tip! If you’re using honey or agave, be sure to mix them with warm water to create a syrup-like consistency.

Do they taste like simple syrup? They’re pretty close. As Rico says, you might pick up a hint of flavor from the agave since it’s plant-based and has a slightly honey-like taste. But overall, all three are great substitutes for traditional simple syrup.

Celebrate International Coffee Day with These 3 Delicious Coffee Cocktails

On 29 September, coffee lovers around the world unite to celebrate International Coffee Day, a day dedicated to honoring the beloved beverage in all its forms. There’s nothing quite like the unique and rich aromas of freshly roasted coffee beans and freshly brewed coffee.

Whether it’s a steaming cup of espresso, a frothy latte, or a cooling iced coffee, the universal love and appreciation for coffee is undeniable.

But let’s not forget that coffee’s allure extends beyond the mug – it’s also a key player in some of the world’s most popular and most loved cocktails. From the rich, velvety allure of Kahlúa to the spirited kick of Irish Whiskey and the smooth sophistication of Vodka, the taste and aroma of coffee adds a whole new dimension to the world of cocktails.

Here are three delicious, easy to make coffee cocktails to honor International Coffee Day:

Irish Coffee
When talking about coffee and cocktails, it’s impossible not to mention the beloved Irish Coffee.

Although variations of coffee cocktails pre-date the Irish Coffee by at least 100 years, the Irish Coffee is certainly the most known and widespread. Believed to have originated in Ireland in the early 1940s, it’s a beloved choice in bars across the world, particularly during colder weather and usually consumed after-dinner.

With just four ingredients – Irish Whiskey, coffee, brown sugar and cream – it’s easy to make. But as always, the quality of your cocktail depends on the quality of your ingredients, and in this case, the freshness and boldness of your coffee is of utmost importance.

Curious how to make an Irish Coffee? Watch our video where Rico shows you how to make the perfect Irish Coffee

Espresso Martini Jelly Shot (aka Espresso Martini Jello Shot)

Oh yes, the Espresso Martini Jelly Shot. Now this a fun twist on a classic cocktail! Imagine drinking a rich and deliciously bold espresso shot topped with a sweet creamy top…and in jello form!

Sip it, slurp it, or just pop it in your mouth, the Espresso Martini Jelly Shot mixes vodka, fresh coffee, Kahlúa and cream to create a shot of delicious, caffeinated bliss.

Most recipes use Gelatin as the gelling agent that gives the shot its jelly-like form but if you’re looking for a Gelatin-free version, you can use another gelling agent such as Agar agar. Discover our recipe for an Espresso Martini Jelly Shot.

White Russian
The White Russian cocktail has its roots in the 1960s, when a creative twist was added to the classic Black Russian cocktail by introducing cream into the mix. The White Russian is the elegant sibling of the Black Russian, with a luxurious layer of cream that makes it even silkier and more lavish.

With its rich, sweet, and creamy blend of vodka, Kahlúa, and heavy cream, the White Russian looks and tastes like a boozy coffee milkshake—yum! Here’s how to make a White Russian.

So, no matter which coffee cocktail you choose to mix, let’s raise a glass (or a cup!) today to celebrate International Coffee Day!

WATCH: How to Make a Classic Aviation Cocktail and a Clean Aviation Vodka-Version

In the latest episode of ‘Drinks with Rico’, Rico shows you not only how to make a classic Aviation cocktail but also a vodka-variation called the Clean Aviation. That’s right, it’s two-recipes-in-one. Make them both and see which you prefer!

The Aviation

First up, Rico shows how to make a traditional Aviation. Whether you’re a connoisseur or just starting on your exploration into the world of cocktails, the Aviation holds a revered place in cocktail culture. It’s a Gin-based classic that beautifully balances floral and citrus flavors with alluring pale purple hues. Shaken and served, the Aviation also boasts some deliciously unique cherry notes courtesy of the Maraschino Liqueur.

Now, if you’re ordered this drink at a bar, you may have received two slightly different drinks – one that contains crème de violette and one without. Rico is in the ‘no crème de violette in an Aviation’ camp. So, what you’ll find here is a classic Aviation recipe dating back to1930. In any case, if you’ve never had an Aviation, you’re in for a real treat.

Clean Aviation

In the second part of our video, you’ll see Rico substitute Gin for Vodka and add some sprays of Pernod Absinthe to create the lesser-known Clean Aviation. “What’s going on here?”, you ask. Just wait until you try this twist on a classic cocktail! Your new favorite drink? It very well could be!

The Clean Aviation is wonderful mix of citrusy and floral flavors, with a touch of herbaceous notes from the Absinthe. Then there’s the smoothness of Vodka that marries perfectly with the notes of the Maraschino liqueur, creating a balanced taste that’s perfect for sipping.

So, what’s it gonna be an Aviation or a Clean Aviation? Why choose!

The Art of Choosing the Right Cocktail Glass

Whether at home or at a bar or restaurant, there’s something undeniably charming about sipping on a finely crafted drink. Sure, the cocktail itself is amazing but it’s also about the environment, context, whose company you’re in, and, well, would you believe, the glass it’s served in.

When you order a cocktail at a bar, you likely watch with fascination as the bartender works their magic. However, you also inevitably take notice of the presentation of the drink—not only the garnish but also the specific type of glass it’s served in.

You see, every cocktail is associated with a specific type of glass. Why? Because every cocktail has its own expression. The glass a drink is served in is more than just a “container” for the liquid but an essential part of the whole experience. Let us explain.

Setting the stage

Imagine you’re at a rooftop bar, the city lights twinkling in the distance, as the sun sets in a blaze of colors. Now, let’s shift gears and imagine you’re a laid-back beachside bar. It’s not only the setting the dictates the drink you order but also the type of glass that it is served in.

Take the Martini, for instance. This iconic concoction of Gin or Vodka and Vermouth deserves to be cradled in a long-stemmed, sophisticated Martini glass. The wide rim of the glass not only allows for a perfect sip but also allows the aroma of the drink to bloom, tantalizing your senses as you take that first, suave sip.

On the flip side, a zesty Margarita begs to be sipped from a playful, salt-rimmed, wide-brimmed Margarita Glass, a variant of a classic Champagne Coupe. The aesthetic appeal of the glass complements the Tequila tang and citrusy kick of the Margarita, enhancing the overall drinking experience. It’s as if the glass and the drink were destined to be together, creating a marriage of flavor and presentation. But then a Mason Jar would also give the Margarita a whole other type of charm.

A different glass for a different drink

In addition to the Martini Glass and Margarita Glass, another popular cocktail glass is the Highball Glass. A Highball Glass is the perfect glass for a Mojito or a Gin and Tonic. Its tall, slender build not only accommodates the generous pour of your drink but also allows plenty of room for ice and garnishes, ensuring that each sip is invigorating from start to finish.

Turning ordinary occasions into moments

From the carefully selected ingredients to the precise measurements, each cocktail is crafted to deliver a sensory journey.

The act of sipping a well-crafted cocktail transforms an ordinary occasion into a memorable moment. It’s about the ambiance, the company, and the anticipation of that first sip.

Enjoying a cocktail goes beyond its delicious taste; it’s about encapsulating the essence of an experience and transforming it into a memorable moment. And the choice of glass plays a significant role.

Mixing cocktails at home

Choosing the right glass for your cocktail isn’t just about aesthetics or tradition although both of those things are important; it’s really about enhancing the entire drinking experience. It’s about setting the stage for the flavors and aromas to shine, and about creating a visual and tactile feast that complements the actual taste of the drink.

So, the next time you’re mixing up a cocktail at home, take a moment to consider the glass you’re using. Think about the vibe you’re trying to create, the character of the drink and most importantly, how the right glass can elevate the entire experience. Fascinating stuff, right?

If there is just one item that’s essential for any bartender, be it at home or a bar, it’s without doubt the shaker. A good shaker is the ultimate tool for mixing it up and bringing the party wherever you are. Our top choice is the Boston Shaker, which is likely the most iconic among bartending equipment. Oh! Don’t miss our video where Rico shows you how to use a cocktail shaker.

Strainer

A strainer keeps the ice and other stuff from getting into your drink while letting all the good stuff. You can see the strainer as the gatekeeper of great flavor, ensuring that every sip is perfection. It’s a small but vital tool for any aspiring mixologist, and the key to pouring out drinks that look as good as they taste.

Fine Strainer

So now that you’re armed with a regular strainer, you’ll also want a fine strainer. Think of a fine strainer as a mini sieve, which is then used together with a regular strainer. The fine strainer might be small, but its impact on the end result of your cocktail is huge.

Juicer
As we said earlier, the quality of the cocktail depends on the quality of the ingredients. In addition to choosing the best spirits for your drinks, there’s nothing better than freshly squeezed juice when it comes to great tasting cocktails.

While nothing beats using a centrifugal juicer, which will give your drink that wonderful fluffy and frothy texture, a regular press or juicer will work just fine for extracting the juice. In the end, the key is to get that juice out of those fruits.

Muddler

The muddler is a handy tool for mashing up fruits, berries, herbs, and other ingredients right in your mixing glass or shaker. It helps release all the tasty flavors and aromas, giving your cocktail that extra oomph. Whether you’re muddling mint for a mojito or crushing up strawberries for a daiquiri, you’re going to want to use a muddler.

Paring Knife

You’ll definitely want to have a nice, sharp paring knife on hand for all your home bartending escapades. When you’re slicing up citrus for garnishes or prepping fresh fruit for muddling, a paring knife is essential. Of course, make sure to keep it sharp.

Peeler

Create those long, juicy strips of citrus zest with ease with the help of a peeler – it’s the secret weapon for zesting fruits. Whether you’re aiming to add a lemon twist to a cocktail or infuse a margarita with a hint of lime, the aromatic oils released from the zest will elevate your drink.

Bar Spoon

No ordinary spoon will do if you want to create great cocktails. The Bar Spoon is akin to a magical wand for stirring up classic cocktails like a Martini and Old Fashioned. Its long, slender design and twisted handle expertly blend ingredients to achieve the perfect balance of flavors.

Mixing Glass

Think of a mixing glass as your trusty sidekick for those “shaken, not stirred” moments. It’s a tall, wide glass with a convenient small spout that makes pouring easier.

When you’re in the mood to mix up a classic cocktail like a Martini or Manhattan, a Mixing Glass helps combine all those delicious ingredients. It also adds a touch of sophistication to your home bartending setup and makes you feel like a pro mixologist every time you reach for it.

Blender
Put simply, if you want to make frozen cocktails, you’ll need one of these bad boys. From tangy margaritas to creamy piña coladas, a blender is your ticket to the ultimate summer chill-out session. It’s the must-have tool for anyone who wants to bring the beach vibes to their own backyard.

Jigger
Also known as a measure, a jigger ensures you’re putting accurate volumes of ingredients into your cocktails to get the right balance. With a jigger, you can say goodbye to those “Oops, I poured too much” moments and hello to precise and consistently great cocktails.

WATCH: How to Make a Big-Batch of Wild Berri Vodka Margaritas

OK, so you’ve got a few friends coming around and you’d like to serve them a delicious, chilled cocktail upon their arrival. But let’s assume you don’t have any cocktail equipment at home. Time is ticking. What do you do?

Call Rico!

That’s right, in the latest episode of ‘Drinks with Rico’, it’s Rico to the rescue. You’ll discover how to whip up a big batch of Wild Berri Vodka Margaritas that are sure to impress your friends. No shaking, no shakers. All you need is a conventional blender.

Phew! Crisis averted. Delicious cocktails at the ready!

What Is a Wild Berri Vodka Margarita?

At Absolut, as we always say, we believe making great drinks should be easy and fun. In fact, we believe that anyone can make a great cocktail if they have quality ingredients.

Now, if you’ve never tasted a Wild Berri Vodka Margarita, you’re in for a treat. “Wait! A Margarita with Vodka?”, you ask. That’s right –also known as a Vodkarita, a margarita made with Vodka is absolutely delicious.

The Wild Berri Vodka Margarita offers a tantalizing fusion of flavors. The vibrant notes of wild berry vodka intertwine with the zesty brightness of orange Curaçao and the tangy freshness of lime juice, creating an extremely well-balanced cocktail.

A Wild Berri Vodka Margarita is a chilled cocktail, not a slushie. And that’s important to remember.

So, to make a batch of Wild Berri Vodka Margaritas, what’ll you need is a bottle of Absolut Wild Berri, Orange Curaçao, fresh Lime Juice, Simple Syrup, fresh Blackberries, and some Ice Cubes.

Not sure how to make a Simple Syrup? Check out this video to learn how to make Simple Syrup.

Balancing and Blending Your Drink

Achieving the right balance of sugar and citrus in a cocktail is crucial just like getting salt and pepper right in food. It’s an art. Luckily, the Wild Berri Vodka Margarita is the perfect drink to prove to your friends that you can balance a drink.

Bartender tip! As Rico explains, “When you shake a cocktail, you get to dilute it and that’s what we’re going to do but in a blender. And to not make a slush, add two Ice Cubes per drink and this will make a beautifully diluted and shaken up cocktail.”

Quick and easy Vodkaritas

Before you start blending, add fresh blueberries (e.g. two per drink) to the mix to add that lovely purple color to your Wild Berri Vodka Margarita. Now, you’ve got some serious eye candy going on.

After blending everything in the blender, all you need is a conventional household sieve to strain the mix and a nice big jug to serve it up in.

There you have it! A batch of Wild Berri Vodka Margaritas. Quick, easy and delicious. And you’ve even got a few moments before your guests arrive to get your rimmed glasses ready and change into a fresh shirt.

Mojito Day – How to Make the World’s Best Mojito

Today is no ordinary weekday. No, No. Today is Mojito Day!

Mojito Day is the day when bartenders around the world celebrate one the most beloved cocktails of all. The king of summer cocktails as bartender Rico would say.

But hey, you don’t need to be a professional bartender to make a great Mojito. That’s right – making a delicious Mojito is easier than you think.

If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to make a great Mojito, today – Mojito Day – is the day to do it. All you need is Light Rum, Mint Leaves, Lime Juice, and Soda Water and ta-da! You’ve got everything you need to create an incredible homemade Mojito!

The History of the Mojito

The Mojito has its roots in Havana, Cuba, although its exact origin, like so many other cocktails, remains a mystery.

According to legend, the invention of the Mojito can be attributed to a famous explorer who encountered a scurvy outbreak on his ship while visiting Cuba. To combat the illness, he stumbled upon a concoction that closely resembled the modern-day Mojito.

Others claim that plantation workers in the Cuban Sugar cane fields created the drink from a simple Sugar cane alcohol called “Aguardiente de cana” (which translates as “firewater of the Sugar cane”).

The Mojito: A Timeless Classic

Fast forward several centuries, and the Mojito continues to captivate taste buds worldwide, enchanting cocktail enthusiasts with its tantalizing blend of flavors. Whether sipped in a bar or enjoyed in the back garden at home, the Mojito is a distinct and timeless elixir that transports you to Havana with every delicious sip.

The combination of Fresh Mint, tangy Lime, and delicious sweetness from both the Light Rum and Simple Syrup creates a distinctive and harmonious blend that delights all the senses. Wow, the aroma of mint. Is there anything better?

The Mojito has rightfully carved out a permanent place in popular culture, frequently making appearances in literature, cinema, and music. Its portrayal as the quintessential drink of carefree summertime bliss has solidified its status as a go-to choice for those seeking a taste of vacation wherever they may be.

Whether it’s immortalized in the pages of a novel or sipped by the suave and charming lead character in an action film, the Mojito continues to win hearts with its distinct, vibrant tastes of summer and timeless sophistication.

Traditional or Modern Mojito? Mix it up!

The Mojito has undergone various adaptations and interpretations over the years. Some purists argue that the traditional recipe is the only way to truly experience the essence of the Mojito.

On the other hand, modern variations incorporating exotic fruits, herbs, and even Flavored Rums have emerged, ushering in a new era of experimentation and innovation while paying homage to the drink’s roots.

If you’re looking for an interesting twist and want to mix things up, we recommend swapping out the Light Rum for Vodka to make a Vodka Mojito. Take a look at our recipe for how to make a Vodka Mojito.

How to Mix and Serve a Mojito the Right Way

When talking about making a Mojito, it’s commonly thought that you should muddle the ingredients, especially the mint leaves. Muddling is essentially gently crushing ingredients, like herbs or fruit, to release their flavors in cocktails.

However, as bartender Rico explains, “You don’t want to muddle the mint leaves because as soon as you start to do that you’re going to start getting bitterness from the chlorophyll or the green that’s  inside the leaves. All you need to do is give them a little slap and then straight away get some citrus juice on it”.

Once you’ve mixed your Mojito, it’s time to serve it. And what’s the best way to serve a Mojito? A Mojito is best served in a tall, slender Highball Glass filled to the brim with Ice. Next, stir your drink using a Bar Spoon – or any other long and skinny spoon you have at home – to lift the Mint Leaves up from the bottom.

Last but certainly not least, don’t forget to garnish your Mojito with more Mint Leaves to really bring out the Mint aromas while you sip. The mint aromas are absolutely vital to the entire Mojito-drinking experience.

So, there it is. Go on,  raise your Highball Glass and say cheers to Mojito Day!

Ready to mix your own Mojito? Check out this Mojito recipe on Absolut Drinks or let bartender Rico walk you through how to make a Mojito.
