Absolut and Art
Absolut was the first spirit brand to forge close ties with art and artists, and we continue this legacy by constantly working with ground-breaking artists. By introducing the Absolut Art Award, Absolut has a new platform on which we are able to create fascinating synergies with amazing artists and writers.
Absolut was the first spirit brand to forge close ties with art and artists. We have been active in the contemporary art world since 1985, when we invited Andy Warhol to create the first in a series of iconic advertisements inspired by the Absolut bottle. Since then, we have collaborated with over 550 artists on over 850 commissioned projects around the world.
Contemporary art is an integral component to Absolut, having developed an international programme of partnerships and inspirational collaborations: supporting artists, art writers and institutions in their efforts to present new works, stimulate ideas and bring people together to enjoy art.
‘Renata Lucas & Coco Fusco - We are proud and humbled to be working and collaborating with such a distinguished artist and writer.’
In 2012 Absolut became the Associate Partner of Art Basel, supporting their Conversation Series. The series brings together leading artistic thinkers to discuss the most interesting and relevant topics currently circulating in the art world. In addition to this, Absolut has collaborated on a series of art bar installations at each Art Basel, open just for a few days.
Our commitment to supporting contemporary artists and their creative process also extends to the biennial Absolut Art Award. Originally launched in 2009 to celebrate 30 years of collaborations with artists, the award was revamped for 2013.
In 2012, when we announced a new format for the 2013 Art Award, several significant changes were made. For the first time the Award recognised and gave substantial funding to both an art writer and a contemporary artist, demonstrating our on- going commitment to the support of ground-breaking artistic practice as well as the development of critical art theory. The prize also offers the winning artist and the art writer a unique opportunity to realise a dream project in the form of a new artwork/project and a new publication respectively, delivering a tangible impact unlike most other awards, grants or stipends.
The winners, artist, Renata Lucas, and art writer/artist, Coco Fusco, are now given the opportunity to develop and present their respective dream projects. We are proud and humbled to be working and collaborating with such a distinguished artist and writer. The dual function of supporting the creative process and the theory of contemporary artistic practice makes the Absolut Art Award unique among international art prizes and we look forward to seeing the winners’ plans develop over the coming months.
