Absolut Citron: a classic Success Story

Ready to step back in time?

The year is 1988. Beetlejuice just came out in the cinema. George Michael’s Faith is number 1 in the Billboard Charts. And, most importantly, Absolut Citron just started hitting the shelves in New York bars – following in the footsteps of the first flavored family member Absolut Peppar, and becoming the main ingredient in the blockbuster drink: the Cosmopolitan. While variations of this pink drink served in a Martini glass are said to date back as far back as the 1930s, it wasn’t until 1988 – the year Absolut Citron was launched – that the Cosmopolitan as it is known today was created.

Credited to New York bartender Toby Cecchini while working at a famous downtown celebrity hang out bar called The Odeon. According to Cecchini, he had been fascinated by Absolut Citron since its release and was determined to use it to create new cocktail recipes. So one night, he decided to create something “pretty and pink” to impress the waitresses. However, what he didn’t realize was that he had just sparked an instant classic and was suddenly making up to 200 every night.

Soon after, the Rainbow Room added the recipe with a flamed orange zest to their menu, and when various celebrities were making the Cosmo their drink of choice, the drink’s classic status was secured in the cocktail history books along with the following drinks.
