We apologize

Posted Sunday, April 06, 2008, 7:38:29 PM

During the weekend we have received several comments on the ad published in Mexico. We acknowledge the reactions and debate and want to apologize for the concerns this ad caused. We are truly sorry and understand that the ad has offended several persons. This was not our intention. The ad has been withdrawn as of Friday April 4th and will not be used in the future.

In no way was the ad meant to offend or disparage, or advocate an altering of borders, lend support to any anti-American sentiment, or to reflect immigration issues.

To ensure that we avoid future similar mistakes, we are adjusting our internal advertising approval process for ads that are developed in local markets.

This is a genuine and sincere apology,

"Pernod Ricard suffers sales slip in Q3

Pernod confident on premium brands growth

Published: 30th Apr 2008

Email article Print article

Pernod Ricard, the new owner of Absolut vodka, has blamed unfavourable currency rates for a one per cent sales dip in its third quarter.

Net sales fell to €1.38bn for the quarter ended March 31st, due to the weakness of the US dollar against the euro, said Pernod on Wednesday.

North America was the epicentre of the sales slip, in what Pernod described as a “difficult environment” for its Kahlua, Chivas Regal and Beefeater brands.

The news may add to concerns that an economic downturn in the US is beginning to hamper drinks firms.

But Pernod said premium brands, including Jameson, Perrier Jouët and Wild Turkey, continued to show “vigorous growth” in the third quarter.

Value sales of the group’s ‘top 15’ brands increased twice as fast as volumes, it said. Organic net sales rose seven per cent globally during the quarter, and nine per cent over the previous nine months.

Vin & Sprit Acquisition

Pernod may be forced to offload some brands acquired as part of its winning bid for Sweden’s Vin & Sprit (V&S), managing director Pierre Pringuet indicated at a recent press conference.

He refused to comment on a report that this could include Plymouth gin.

He told Drinks International there would be no production hike for Absolut vodka, the jewel of the V&S deal. Absolut volumes would be increased “gradually”, he said."

No production hikes for Absolut. Wonder why? And guess which brand Pernod Ricard will be "offloading"?

Laugh, reconquistas, jihadis and self loathers, laugh.

It is interesting that Absolut eliminated a page of comments last night...as they have done on other occasions on this blog.

Guess I struck too close to home, eh, Abso? Good. You got the message.....as did Pernot Ricard, which is certainly also monitoring this blog.

As for the reconquista, jihadi, self loathing types commenting here? Watch the numbers - that is to say, the plummeting numbers for Absolut sales. See how effective you've been.

It is/you are to laugh!

Well, Well, Well, TOM and his gang took the afternoon off and nobody bashed Mexicans or complained about Absoluts' ad. Yep they were probably out yelling at the May day marchers. Being 10:42 p.m. where I'm at, they're probably having a drink, hopefully with absolut because they now know for a fact that it's the best vodka out there. Remember TOM and gang, Cinco de Mayo is coming! Another reason to celebrate huh! Do it with absolut.

NAh, nobody wants to save the Republic tonite by letting the world know of how ignorant they are.

Your ad is not offensive in anyway.

I'm a proud American and I'm educated well enough to be able to identify an historical map when I see one. Your marketing approach in Mexico was appropriate, well planned and well executed, and I'm sure it helped you gain significant ground in the Mexican liquor market. It merely plays to the sentiments of the Mexicans... what is the harm?... it's a great marketing device.

I don't have the slightly notion or concern that Absolut is advocating a regression to the pre-US-Mexican War border... what would you have to gain with such a position?... this is simply preposterous! Moreover, I'm not sitting at home at night worrying about where Mexicans think the "absolut" border should be drawn. I'm a non-racist, confident, high wage earner who knows the difference between satire and reality. The people that are complaining here and elsewhere are wound too tightly (probably not the type that would enjoy downing a smooth Vodka like Absolut anyway). They probably reveal more about their discontent with their lives than with the red herring they are pursuing here. More than likely than not, if they drink vodka at all, they are drinking that other low quality S-off Vodka, which is not suitable for human consumption.

You have a superior product and I for one will continue to buy and drink it!

International Workers' Day is the commemoration of the Haymarket Event in Chicago in 1886; in 1889, the first congress of the Second International , meeting in Paris for the centennial of the French Revolution and the Exposition Universelle (1889) , following an initiative from the American Federation of Labor, called for international demonstrations on the 1890 anniversary of the Chicago protests. These were so successful that May Day was formally recognized as an annual event at the International's second congress in 1891.

It is not surprising that the state, business leaders, mainstream union officials, and the media would want to hide the true history of May Day. In its attempt to erase the history and significance of May Day, the United States government declared May 1st to be "Law Day", and gave the workers instead Labor Day, the first Monday of September - a holiday devoid of any historical significance.

Nevertheless, rather than suppressing the labor and anarchist movements, the events of 1886 and the execution of the Chicago anarchists, spokesmen of the movement for the eight-hour day, mobilized many generations of radicals. Emma Goldman, a young immigrant at the time, later pointed to the Haymarket affair as her political birth. Instead of disappearing, the anarchist movement only grew in the wake of Haymarket.

As workers, we must recognize and commemorate May Day not only for it's historical significance, but also as a time to organize around issues of vital importance to the working-class, i.e. the people, of today.

On May 1, 1886, Chicago unionists, reformers, socialists, anarchists, and ordinary workers combined to make the city the center of the national movement for an eight-hour day. Between April 25 and May 4, workers attended scores of meetings and paraded through the streets at least 19 times. On Saturday, May 1, 35,000 workers walked off their jobs. Tens of thousands more, both skilled and unskilled, joined them on May 3 and 4. Crowds traveled from workplace to workplace urging fellow workers to strike. Many now adopted the radical demand of eight hours' work for ten hours' pay. Police clashed with strikers at least a dozen times, three with shootings.

REMEMBER THE FALLEN
REMEMBER THE GOVERNMENT DOESN’T ALWAYS TELL THE TRUTH
PERFECT EXAMPLE OF HOW HISTORY IS BIASSED

HOW MANY OF YOU KNEW OF THE CHICAGO MASSACRE?

TODAY THE ENTIRE WORLD CELEBRATES LABOR DAY EXCEPT THE U.S. DUE TO ITS SHAMEFUL ACTIONS.

A toast to those who died for just labor laws!
Cheers with Absolut.

Goose Rider -- good point about calling someone a maggot. That was bad judgement. I still think whining about a print ad displays certain level of vicitmization. Waaah! You hurt us with your ad! Waaah! You insult our love of freedom by using freedom of speech to display a vodka ad!. Now we're going to boycott you. Like they're really scared of Texans! Now if the boycott was led by Manhattanites, that would be different. BTW, New York Times gave Absolut Citron its highest accolades in its flavored vodka tasting yesterday. Millions read that story, while maybe a few dozen are checking out these 6 point font posts...

To all those Americans who used to buy Absolut but are now switching to Skyy: why idid it take so long? Why were you patronizing a socialist-produced product in the first place? Amazing that in this once strong and proud nation, people like Tom from Texas play the victim card in whining how hurt and insulted he was by a creative print ad. How did we become populated by poor pathetic victims like Tom from Texas? What caused the transition from innovative, hard working Americans to whining, blog posters like this drivelling maggot from Texas?
Chris : excellent comment , I coudn't have said it better. Cheers.

Thanks Goose Rider, how can I add to your post? Although, I am sure I will now be accused of blogging under the assumed name of Goose Rider! Interesting after 46 years, I thought I had been called everything in the book … but victim, now that’s a first! No Absolut for me, EVER!
