Our seven most inspirational women who know no boundaries

MOST INSPIRING WOMAN FOR HER PHILOSOPHICAL MUSINGS

Who? Joan Didion
Occupation: Writer
We find her inspiring because: At an incredible 80 years old, writer Joan Didion proves that style is not wasted on the young as the face of the SS15 Celine campaign (pictured). Not only is Didion still incredibly chic and effervescently cool, she has long (as in for over fifty years) been the pioneer of female writers. Having transformed fashion writing in the early 60’s when she was a writer for Vogue, Joan has also published many an insightful and honest book. Fascinated are many by Didion’s person, a documentary of her life, We Tell Ourselves Stories in Order to Live, directed by her nephew Griffin Dunne is currently in production.

MOST INSPIRING WOMAN FOR BOLD GESTURES

Who: Lena Dunham
Occupation: Actress, writer, director and feminist

We find her inspiring because: This one is somewhat self explanatory. Not one to shy away from speaking her mind and actively encouraging feminism among the many campaigns Lena’s supported (including the Free The Nipple), Dunham’s currently leading Planned Parenthood, a campaign that encourages more women to vote for reproductive rights in America. Having already inspired heaps of new women filmmakers, Lena has been named the voice of our generation and she drops some serious lines of advice in her book, Not That Kind of Girl.

MOST INSPIRING WOMAN FOR CRUSHING STEREOTYPES

Who: Desiree Akhavan
Occupation: Director, Actress

We find her inspiring because: Rising to fame as the new star on the hit TV show Girls, Desiree Akhavan is way more than just an actress. Praised by her industry peers, she’s been nominated for an Independent Spirit Award and featured as one of Filmmaker magazine’s ‘25 new Faces of Film’. As an exciting up-and-coming director, Desiree has already created some ripples with her debut Sundance-approved film, ‘Appropriate Behaviour’. This quirky Brooklynite indie flick follows a twenty-something Iranian-American bisexual teacher and shows that Akhavan has no problems pushing boundaries, much like in her real-life. She pushes female bisexuality in her dark-comedy narratives

MOST INSPIRING WOMAN FOR MODERN DAY DATING

Who: Robyn Exton
Occupation: founder of Dattch (soon to be called HER), the dating app for girls who dig girls

We find her inspiring because: Robyn took lesbianism into the modern day by creating a dating app akin (but very different) to Grindr, the dating app for the gay man. Championing equal dating rights between the gay and lesbian communities, Robyn certainly puts a unique spin on things. Dattch takes inspiration from Pintrest, believing that the psychology of one person’s images gives you a clearer indication of what kind of person they really are. We certainly prefer it to yet another #selfie.

MOST INSPIRING WOMAN SPINNING HER WAY TO THE TOP OF THE BOYS CLUB

Who? Hanna Hanra
Occupation: DJ, creator of BEAT magazine and contributing editor at ELLE and i-D.

We find her inspiring because: She makes a strong stand about the fact that no female DJ’s are in DJ Magazine’s top 100 DJ list, citing in the Guardian, ‘Boys aren't better at DJing than girls. We don't DJ with our vaginas’. And not only is she known for top notch mixing skills at the hugest nights and the coolest fashion events (and her second to none partying skills) her more than established and respected editorial voice often promotes pioneering and up and coming female beat-makers.

MOST INSPIRING WOMAN FOR SHOUTING BACK

Who? Laura Bates
Occupation: Founder of The Everyday Sexism Project

We find her inspiring because: Described as "one of the biggest social media success stories on the internet", The Everyday Sexism Project’s purpose is to document everyday examples of sexism as reported by contributors around the world. Not only bringing sexism to light in a really unique and effective way at a time when some argue that ‘sexism is dead’ – Bates has joined the ‘power list’ of Britain’s 10 most influential women thanks to her ingenious project.

MOST INSPIRING WOMAN FOR SHAKING OFF THE HATERS

Who: Taylor Swift
Occupation: Singer Songwriter

We find her inspiring because: Crowned most charitable celebrity of 2014 for donating all the proceeds from “Welcome To New York” to public schools in the Big Apple, Swift certainly has the people appeal. However – and we don’t mean to be cynical here - perhaps she can afford to do such things as Swift is still adamant that Spotify can’t play her tracks (one of only three artists in the world). Cynicism aside, thanks to Wonderland Magazine’s December issue (pictured) we’ve seen Taylor Swift in a whole new light. And we like it. Swift has been transformed from guilty pleasure to Queen of Pop before our eyes.
