The Bloody Mary is a timeless cocktail that goes from revolution to revelation.

The Bloody Mary

When you think of classic cocktails, none has a more storied past than the Bloody Mary.

Its origins are as murky as the tomato juice it's made of, but it's generally agreed that one story is probably true.

This involves a bartender named Fernand "Pete" Petiot, who worked at the famed Harry's New York Bar in 1920s Paris. It was at this time that Russians escaping the revolution back home began arriving in Paris, bringing with them vodka. At the same time Petiot was also introduced to American canned tomato juice, which back in the dry days of Prohibition was called a "tomato juice cocktail". Et voila! The Bloody Mary was born.

Of course, there are other theories. The most bloody dates back to the rule of Queen Mary I of England. In this story, the tomato juice represents the blood spilled and the vodka – the brutal means of execution used during Mary's reign.
